Asher Milgate
Above / Below
A sewing machine features significantly in the creation of Asher Milgate’s unique photographic assemblages. We met Asher soon after his arrival from Australia to Devonport and were moved by his story, captured by camera with images that embodied the emotion of a journey through indigenous landscape, trammelled by colonisation. Asher’s work has long been concerned with regional landscapes and the imprints of lived experience and here resonate with his continuing story in Devonport. His photographs are not concerned with what is immediately visible but instead with what is felt, inherited, and often unseen. Through landscapes, structures, and remnants of the everyday, he evokes the lingering presence of history, inviting the viewer into a space of reckoning.
