Rediscovered Landscapes
I have always had a long held love of landscapes. As a boy I explored the hills behind Havelock North where I grew up. I drew and made maps of this area's limestone bluffs and valleys. The way we interpret landscapes through maps and charts and the way we record the geological and archaeological history of the land has always fascinated me. This interest is represented in the Computer Motherboard studies in this exhibition.

Charles Bradley Art Statement. I have lived in Devonport for the last 34 years. I was born and educated in Hawkes Bay and went on to graduate from the Canterbury School of Fine Arts. On completing my tertiary education I spent several years working in the UK, a brief part of which involved working in commercial art. On returning to New Zealand, the greater part of my professional career was spent running a Secondary School Art Department. It was only after retirement 9 years ago that I rediscovered the creative energy needed to explore my own work. In my youth I was given a set of aerial photographs of earth taken from a high altitude. My interest in these images, along with the later advent of satellite images of earth, has had a direct bearing on my creative process. The many family holidays spent in Devonport in the late 1960s underpin my love of this area and this is reflected in my work. My drawings are the result of time spent exploring a broad range of New Zealand landscapes and they also reflect my interest in the early topographical studies produced by artists on Cook’s first voyage to Aotearoa/ New Zealand in 1769.
