Te Whiti, along with Tohu, were Māori prophets who led a peaceful resistance against government forces over land acquisition at Parihaka in 1881.

Te Whiti often studied the bible and came to regard it as the infallible Word of God: "If only we believe the bible we are right," he said. He was deeply impressed by Christ's life and words. His Christian conviction remained with him all his life and influenced his non-violent stance.
