Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki was a Māori prophet and one of the nineteenth century’s most significant leaders. In both war and peace, he sought to redeem his people and the land from European control. He was a feared opponent of colonial forces. In 1872 he fled from colonial troops to the King country where he spent the next decade under the protection of the Māori King Tāwhiao. Tāwhiao’s influence would encourage Te Kooti to embrace pacifism and turn away from war.
