Tarore was an 11-year-old girl who often carried a small gospel book in a kete around her neck. She was killed by a Rotorua war party that raided and sacked a mission station in Matamata in 1836. She was the daughter of Wiremu Ngākuku, a Rangatira of the iwi Ngāti Hauā. Her story is treasured as an example of forgiveness after her father chose not to seek revenge against her killers, following her death. Her gospel book was key to the spread of Christianity amongst Māori.
