Oil on woollen blanket (2024)

Mother Mary Joseph Aubert worked as a teacher, catechist and nurse. She became interested in Māori herbal remedies, and in 1879, published a Māori-language prayerbook and catechism, Kō te ako me te karakia ō te hāhi Katorika Rōmana.

She led an extraordinary life of service to both Māori and Pakeha, organising a religious order, helping the poor, writing books in and about Te reo and making a unique blend of combined European and Māori herbal remedies. She is currently being put forward to the catholic church for canonisation to be recognised as a saint
