Mother – Ellen Beth b.1941 (Mt Albert,Auckland) –

Mum spent many years on a farm in Kumeu as a child walking great distances to school with her brothers. On her 15th birthday was made to leave school as her father had secured a job for her as a machinist for women’s clothing. She had wanted to finish the school year and become a kindergarten teacher. She stayed as a machinist for many years and later worked with Dad catering for Epsom Girls Grammar Hostel and St Johns Evangelist College. Mum made all her own clothing and taught us three girls to sew. Mum was also an enthusiast gardener and preserved all the fruit and vegetables that she and Dad grew. At 83 years she is still making the family favourite tomato relish, pickled beetroot and guava jelly.
