There it was, moth holes and sun bleach, on the door of a back room. I asked its price. “Offer anything,” said the shop assistant, “we can’t sell that.” I walked out with a $10 servicemen’s jacket. The deconstructed fabric is sewn in a patchwork of wool and cotton thread, referencing Cilla McQueen’s Warpath reconstructed by fragments of military jargon. These are layers of pockets, seams, and straps, the texture resembling that of a burnt blanket or quilt, its crossed frame no more an armature than it is a crucifix or headstone; addressing the abhorrent repetition of war.

A recent graduate from the Ilam School of Fine Arts, residing in The Far North. My practice focuses on documenting the ground we stand on, through dramatised reflections of spatial experience. Whether these reflections are written, or captured through photography, the found materials are always in a state of flux, dissolving, reappearing frequently, and collected by those who value them. They serve as markers and references to define continuity within the many threads of life. This is not done to confine spatial encounters to their singular origins but rather to weave them together through a narrative that expresses the impact of our living environment on our ways of being.
