‘Collateral Damage’ continues my series of major works such as ‘Falls the Shadow’ and ‘Victory Medal’; as a tribute to, and an acknowledgement of, the sacrifices of New Zealand men and women who have served and continue to serve New Zealand in war time settings.

Euphemistic words and phrases such as ‘sacrifice’, ‘casualties’ and ‘collateral damage’, belie the true dark destructiveness of war; the consequences of which reach across generations.

As with ‘Victory Medal’, ‘Collateral Damage’ is a sardonic look at the tragic and defeating nature of war, where suffering and death are indiscriminate.

In ‘Collateral Damage’ the vulnerability of the hands outstretched- their open palms, are a final gesture of human helplessness in the face of all this.

Helen Pollock

When Helen Pollock first started exhibiting in the 1980s, her sculpture had a distinctly feminist perspective in theme, form, and content. More recently, she has focused on commemorative and memorial work, giving particular consideration to the sacrifices made by New Zealanders during World War I (WWI).
