As I turned to thank the elderly Italian man for taking us to the Assisi War Cemetery, I saw tears in his eyes, and instead it was he thanking us. Such was his memory of the horrors of war and of the sacrifice our men made during the Italian campaign to liberate townships. 1944 saw, 945 commonwealth casualties, 29 from Aotearoa NZ, buried row upon row. And here lay the bones of my dad’s cousin. Overwhelmed, and in the stillness, I sang to my whanaunga, ‘Au e Ihu’ – the soldiers’ hymn as adopted by the 28 Maori Battalion.
