333 mm ceramic

My first journey into ceramics was in the late seventies when I worked exclusively in porcelain mainly making vases to order for various shops. Then family commitments and other creative pursuits took over and it took a move to Waiheke, after a break of over thirty years, my love of ceramics was rekindled when I met Belinda. She was keen to start sculpting in clay and together we started a new ceramic journey. We had a lot of fun sourcing all the equipment we needed to set up a studio using mainly second hand items found locally. My work is now very much inspired by the beauty of the natural world and often reflects my love of colour, texture and birds. I have a particular interest in owls and the work of the Martin Brothers who were some of the first English “studio potters”, still famous today for their “Wallybirds”. A few years ago I began to make a series of small sculptures called “Waiheke Wallybirds”, referencing with amusement a number of archetypical island personalities. From time to time I add to this series.

In 2018 I graduated from Otago Polytechnic with a Diploma in Ceramic Arts. Now I work mainly with Porcelain or Stoneware clay and enjoy making my own slips and glazes. I am now resident in Devonport.
